Alaska Rafting

Alaska offers a spectacular array of rafting opportunities, from southeast Alaska to the state's interior, from short half-day guided river floats to multi-day fly in raft trips to Alaska's backcountry. Few locations, however, are more popular for Alaska rafting than Denali National Park. In the summer season there are a half dozen or so Denali rafting companies operating near Denali National Park, taking tens of thousand of Alaska visitors rafting on the Nenana River each summer.

Denali National Park covers more than 6 million acres, and is home to 20,300 foot Mt. McKinley, abundant wildlife and some of Alaska's best rafting. Nearly all raft trips travel the Nenana River, which flows to the north through the Alaska Range and borders the eastern side of Denali National Park. The Nenana River offers great Alaska rafting adventures, from calm float sections to class III and IV whitewater rafting. While longer trips are available, most Denali rafting participants choose one of the two to three hour raft trips, which operate within 10 to 12 miles of the Denali Park entrance. These trips include float trips to the south of the Denali Park entrance and Alaska whitewater rafting trips to the north. Rafts are typically around eighteen feet long and hold six to eight passengers plus an experienced Denali rafting guide. Usually the raft guide is at the oars, but paddle trips are sometimes available if you want part of the action.

Denali Whitewater Rafting
If you are the adventurous type, then the whitewater trip is for you. These trips start near the Denali Park entrance then travel about 11 miles down the Nenana River through the “canyon” to the town of Healy. This raft trip is not recommended for children under 12 or if you are pregnant, and you want to be sure to leave your expensive camera or video equipment at the hotel. Check out our selection of Denali whitewater raft trips available at 7:30am, 10:00am, 3:00pm, and 6:30pm.

Denali Float Trips
Float trips start south of the Denali Park entrance and travel about 11 miles on the Nenana River, ending just north of the entrance. They are great introductory trips, and a great family rafting adventure as well. Recommended minimum age is 5 years old. It is not uncommon to see Alaska wildlife such as moose, caribou, sheep and bear on this trip. Check out our selection of Denali float trips available at 7:30am, 12:30pm, and 6:30pm.

Manila is located in the Delta Region.

Current Weather
Clear, 70°F.

Follow the green-and-white pilot wheel markers along the Great River Road in the heart of eastern Arkansas's Mississippi River Delta country. The road, designated a national scenic byway, will lead you from north to south through this rich agricultural kingdom where cotton, rice, soybeans and wheat flourish in some of Arkansas's richest soils. Crowley's Ridge Parkway, another nation scenic byway, also winds through this region, providing excellent views of the productive land from atop a geologic oddity rising from the Delta. Learn more about Crowley's Ridge.

This is the land where Europeans first crossed the Mississippi in 1541, where you can experience a taste of the civilizations they found here at the Hampson Museum State Park at Wilson and at Parkin Archeological State Park at Parkin. You can relive the early days of more recent settlement at countless museums throughout the region, including the Arkansas State University Museum at Jonesboro and the Museum of the Arkansas Grand Prairie at Stuttgart.

Highpoints include the Hemingway-Pfeiffer Museum & Education Center at Piggott, where "papa" penned portions of "A Farewell to Arms"; the historic riverport of Helena, where the Delta Cultural Center interprets the land, the people and the music of the river country; Arkansas Post National Memorial, which preserves the site of the earliest settlement in the lower Mississippi River Valley; Southland Greyhound Park, one of the largest dog tracks in the country; and Lake Chicot State Park, where fishing is exceptional and bird watching second to none. And don't miss the Louisiana Purchase State Park, where a monument marks the initial point for surveys of the 1803 Louisiana Purchase. Special bicentennial celebrations across the state are planned for 2003. Learn more at www.LaPurchase.org.

America's best places to practice

Gainesville, GA. Located on the shores of Lake Lanier, and nestled in the foothills of the North Georgia Mountains, this city of more than 32,000 people is roughly 50 miles northeast of Atlanta. The major health facility in town is a 461-bed, not-for-profit hospital, Northeast Georgia Medical Center and Health System, which employs 422 physicians and consists of a main campus and the Lanier Park Campus, acquired in 2001. This year, HealthGrades, a leading healthcare rating company, gave NGHS's Ronnie Green Heart Center its highest ranking in three cardiac categories: overall care, surgery, and interventions. Nationally, the center placed within the top 5 percent of all hospitals in overall cardiac services and surgery. "Gainesville has an excellent healthcare community, a strong economy, good schools, both lake and mountain access, all within an hour's drive of Atlanta's main shopping district," says Smith.

There are some drawbacks. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Georgia, a subsidiary of WellPoint Health Networks, controls 68 percent of the combined HMO/PPO market, according to the latest AMA Competition in Health Insurance study. And the AMA's medical liability study still lists Georgia among the states that bear watching. On this last point, though, Smith says: "The Gainesville patient is more likely to have a personal relationship with her physician, and, therefore, is far less likely to be engaged in litigation if something goes wrong."

Waynesville, Clyde, and Hendersonville, NC. The largest and best-known city in this northwestern corner of the state is Asheville, population 72,000. Situated in the French Broad River valley, amid the Blue Ridge and Great Smoky Mountains, this "yuppie magnet area," as one consultant called it, has a thriving healthcare community—perhaps too thriving for the physician looking for new opportunities. "It wasn't too long ago that Asheville was considered by many the 'next city,' the one you went to as an alternative to Raleigh-Durham, Winston-Salem, or even Atlanta," Smith says. "But, at this point, established primary care and specialty groups pretty much control it," making it difficult for doctors starting new practices or looking for jobs at an attractive salary.

Enter Waynesville, population around 10,000, and the towns of Clyde and Hendersonville. According to Smith, these are now the "next cities," where, as he says, doctors willing to go a little beyond Asheville "can add between 10 to 30 percent to their base incomes." The 125-bed Haywood Regional Medical Center, in Clyde, serves both that city and Waynesville, approximately 10 miles away. Other hospitals in the general area are Harris Regional Hospital, in Sylva, and Cherokee Indian Hospital, in Cherokee. In Hendersonville, a picturesque city of 12,000, Pardee Hospital, a 222-bed acute care facility, also serves the surrounding towns in Henderson County, population 97,000. According to the AMA, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina is the major health plan in the Asheville area, with 46 percent of the combined HMO/PPO market.

CHICAGO

Destinations and Interests

It's been called the city of broad shoulders.
Sit on Chicago's shoulders and you see a town that deserves its reputation as a world-renowned business center, with companies like Johnson & Johnson, IBM, Lucent, and Molex, among many others, maintaining offices here. Urban action that rivals Los Angeles and New York and a super setting right on Lake Michigan - the Windy City's got it all.

Its wonderful ethnic mix makes for a rich diversity in both neighborhoods and cuisine. It's a place that offers killer kosher hotdogs, the original Uno's pizza and Italian beef sandwiches alongside cutting-edge cuisine that inspires any gourmet appetite.

But Chicago is much more than food, it's a melting pot with a proud immigrant heritage and cosmopolitan flair. Chicago also offers plenty of venues for art, sports, music, theater, opera, architecture, shopping or just walking around. Name your cultural passion or pastime, and Chicago's got a top-notch offering!

Get cross-eyed staring at Seurat's famous pointillism at the Art Institute or get crazy watching the Cubs at Wrigley Field. Walk around Buckingham Fountain, Lincoln Park and Navy Pier, or tour the city's Frank Lloyd Wright buildings and famous Louis Sullivan skyscrapers. Tool around Lakeshore Drive or shop Michigan Avenue's Magnificent Mile.

While you're out exploring, you never know who you might bump into. Chicago has been called home by Oprah, Roger Ebert, Buddy Guy and a bunch of other happening folks.

If you like Midwestern candor and Great Lakes adventures with your big-city excitement, you'll feel right at home here.

Hawaiian Islands

Oahu: is home to Honolulu and the world-famous Waikiki Beach. It is a place for the young at heart, with a lively nightlife – especially in Waikiki. Days can be spent either relaxing on the beach or surfing the huge waves on Oahu’s north shore. Visitors may like to take the opportunity to visit the Iolani Palace – dating back to 1882 and constructed in a mixture of European styles by King Kalakaua. The more recent history of Hawaii can be gleaned in a visit to the US naval bases on Oahu.

Maui: is the Valley Isle of white-sand beaches and breathtaking vistas. The well-designed resorts on the island have meant that Maui now rivals Oahu as the most popular tourist island. Resort guests can partake in horse riding, golf, tennis, sailing, canoeing and a wide range of water sports. In addition, since the end of the whaling industry, humpback whales are frequently sighted offshore enjoying the warm Maui waters.

Kauai: is known as the Garden Island and offers a landscape of luscious shades of green. Formed by one central volcano, the sheer height of the mountain means that the peak experiences excellent rainfall and the island has a number of picturesque rivers. Relax and enjoy swimming on Poipu, Anini and Lumahai beaches or be astounded by the beautiful views of Waive Canyon from the lookout.

Hawaii: is referred to as the Big Island to distinguish it from the state of Hawaii. As its name suggests, it is the largest of Hawaii’s islands – in fact, it’s twice the size of all the other islands put together. This tranquil island is renowned for its beautiful exotic flowers, especially orchids. A trip to the Volcanoes National Park is suggested.

Qantas Vacations are the largest purchasers of hotel rooms and tourist services in the South Pacific. This translates into lower rates and savings for you when you’re booking a Hawaiian vacation. Travel to Hawaii and visit: Waikiki Beach in Honolulu, Oahu, Maui, Kauai, and Hawaii – referred to as the Big Island. Living History Package

A Brougham is a servant driven fine coach of the upper class. Our restored Brougham was made by the renowned Brewster Company and is of museum quality.

This rare vehicle is now available to museums, organizations, libraries, schools and educational facilities as part of a Living History presentation of the Civil War and Victorian era. This package is also available for private events and re-enactments.

Package Description

The package includes the Brougham Coach and a Victorian era living history interpreter , who reveals the life of the wife of a Civil War Doctor or of a Civil War Widow.

Mary Lou Pavlik The persona, Maryann Lewis Bronson, whose husband, Dr. George Bronson, is serving or had served in the union army, as a hospital steward in the 11th Connecticut Volunteer Regiment. Mrs. Bronson arrives and departs in the Brougham, attended by properly attired coachman and footman. The Brougham will remain on display the entire time, providing the unique opportunity to interact in the first person with a tableau of persona and transportation of the Civil War and Victorian era.

In whatever role is desired our interpreter will mingle and interact with your class or group answering questions within the context of the role, always in the first person. Alternately she will address the group in a monologue description of the life, hopes and fears of her persona excerpting from original letters written by Dr. George Bronson to his wife in anticipation of and after several major battles of the Civil War.

Tours Horseback Riding

Desafio Adventure Company offers a number of horseback tours in and around Monteverde. We offer rides suitable for any level of experience.

Excellent horses and guides have given our company a reputation for quality horseback riding in Costa Rica. Check out our unique trail to the Arenal Volcano, the only horse ride of it's kind being offered!

We are fortunate to work with Franklin Arce who runs his stable in Monteverde and our stables near the Arenal Lake. With his expertise and knowledge we are able to provide visitors with top quality rides.

Many people are skeptical about riding horses in Costa Rica due in part to negative press on the subject, not all of it unfounded. The reason to be weary is that some people only see short-term profit and to them a horse is just a means to make money. The more tours the horse does the more money they make. This practice by some has given a bad reputation to the horse industry of Costa Rica. There were cases of horses collapsing from exhaustion and people riding trails covered in mud that were not in a condition to ride upon. These neglects tainted the image of horseback rides.

monteverde horse stable

Now that you have been forewarned let us tell you that this does not mean you should not go for a ride on your visit. There are many responsible horseback tour operators in Costa Rica. Some of the ways you can decide if a company caring properly for it’s horses as well as its customers is to visit their stables. You do not have to be a vet to see if the horses look healthy. You can tell a lot about how people treat their horses by seeing where they live and eat.

SHIP TOUR IN LONDON

The Trident tour finishes

Blimey. I’m not sure how time has slipped past so fast but, after a five week frenzy of Faslane blockading, crane climbing, arrests, solitary confinement, losing the ship, getting it back again, bearing witness, gigs, press conferences, political events, rallies and general sleep deprivation, the Trident: we don’t buy it tour has just come to an end.

The Arctic Sunrise set sail for Scandinavia a couple of hours ago, cheered on from the quayside by a smattering of exhausted Greenpeace folk and watched by the police boat that inevitably appears every time the ship moves.

It was a strange moment; I’d realised I was getting sucked into ship life when, about 10 days into the tour, I found myself shouting “Heave to the aft!” without any sense of irony. Waving the ship off this morning, I realised how badly I was going to miss the Sunrise and her crew. It’s hard not to fall in love with the intense whirlwind that is life onboard a Greenpeace ship, and I’m not sure how I’m going to deal with a home that has no portholes and an office that doesn’t rock from side to side.

It’s been a busy old tour – I can’t believe how much has happened in a short time. I phoned my mother the other night and she asked what I’d been up to. “Not much,” I said. “Oh, I interviewed Ken Livingstone yesterday. And I was arrested and held in solitary for three days last week. Yep, for blockading a nuclear base. Oh, and I learned to drive an inflatable boat. And Scottish Parliament passed a motion in support of our actions. Um, and there’s a concert onboard tomorrow with lots of my heroes playing...”

The tour ended really with the day of the vote - 24 hours of rallies, protests and blockades across the country (including rooftop protests in Edinburgh and blockades at Faslane). We were at Parliament Square, with dozens of other groups campaigning for peace. It was an impressive day; the most powerful part for me was the silent vigil at dusk. A couple of hundred people stood silently and looked up to Parliament, where MPs prepared to vote on whether to create a new incarnation of the most destructive weapon ever invented. The vigil was immediately followed by the ear piercing alert of an air raid siren, to remind MPs of the future they were choosing on behalf of humanity.

A short while later, I was standing next to a friend as he was threatened with arrest under the Serious Organised Crime and Police Act. Inside Parliament, MPs were voting to breach the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and to reintroduce the threat of nuclear war to the world. My friend had pedalled his bicycle around Parliament Square a few times in protest. Which is the serious organised crime?

There was a strange mood onboard the ship after the vote; part exhaustion, part sadness at saying so many goodbyes, part pride at what the campaign has achieved. Or maybe that was just me... Certainly, the crew’s reactions to the vote were mixed, with some people feeling despondent that we lost the vote (we didn’t expect the amendment to win, but we did dare to hope) and others delighted at the scale of the Labour rebellion.

While Blair – who once stood for parliament as a member of CND - has made the world a more dangerous place and signed the UK up to another 50 years of nuclear madness, this was the biggest Labour rebellion since Iraq and the story isn't over, by any means. We’ll hold the government to account over its promises about further parliamentary votes as the Trident plans progress. Faslane 365 will keep taking non-violent direct action at Faslane every day for months to come. And Block the Builders will keep the pressure on at Aldermaston, where the bombs are built...

Unfortunately, the frenzy of the past five weeks has meant that I haven’t had time to write about everything I’ve wanted to. Like the wonderful Faslane 365 folk, MSPs and others who came to support us outside the court in Scotland, with banners reading “You can’t sink a rainbow... And you can’t lock up a sunrise” (referring to the sinking of the Rainbow Warrior and the impounding of the Arctic Sunrise). And like Harry, a member of Pensioners Against Trident who rode his motorbike up to the ship one cold night when we were in Greenock, hung up a few banners and stayed as a guest for several days, writing poems, telling stories and singing songs about Trident.

Mostly, I’ve wanted to write more about the crew - wonderful characters of all ages from all over the world with all manner of stories to tell - who have made it an absolute privilege to work on the ship as part of this campaign. But I’ve run out of time, so I’ll have to stick with just saying a huge thank you to them for giving up sleep, their days off and, for a while, their freedom to make it all happen, and for keeping smiling while it was all happening. And, without wanting to get too Gwyneth on you, a huge thanks to everybody else who’s been involved – whether through volunteering, donations, writing to your MP, coming to the rally or visiting the boat. You’ve been grand.

Travel To Nepal

Nepal was created from an amalgam of small principalities in 1768 under King Prithvi Narayan Shah. Under the control of a hereditary king, Nepal then became a 'buffer state' between the British empire and the territories to the north. The main instrument of British rule from the mid-19th century onwards was a hereditary Prime Minister drawn from the Rana family. The country became formally independent in 1923, but it was not until 1947 (the year of Indian independence) and the total withdrawal of the British from the region that Nepal achieved genuine independence.

Nepal is known as the abode of the gods. For many years a secret, unknown country, it was, in the 1950s, faced with making a leap from the 11th century to modern times. Visited first by mountaineers and trekkers, it later became the haunt of hippies. In 1989, restrictions barring several areas to tourists were lifted.

Despite being one of the poorest countries in the world, a situation made worse by an ongoing Maoist rebellion (Communist Party of Nepal), which has left more than 12,000 people dead, and more than 100,000 displaced since it started in 1996, the country is a potentially very popular tourist destination.

In addition to a distinctive ancient Hindu and Buddhist culture, Nepal has the world's highest mountain, Everest, and spectacular scenery and wildlife. For walkers and trekkers, Nepal is a true paradise: the picturesque hamlets and mountain villages are linked by hundreds of trails that have been used for centuries, with little change noticeable even today. Numerous temples and Buddhist shrines can be also be discovered en route.

The Nepalese government has also set aside more than 35 per cent of the total area of the country as natural sanctuaries. There are now nine national parks and three wildlife reserves, located both in the mountainous zones as well as in the tropical plains. The Terai lowlands in the south form the richest habitat in the country.

London
is the place to start. Nowhere in the country can match the scope and innovation of the metropolis, a colossal, frenetic city, perhaps not as immediately attractive as its European counterparts, but with so much variety that the only obstacle to a great time is the shockingly high cost of everything. It's here that you'll find Britain's best spread of nightlife, cultural events, museums, galleries, pubs and restaurants. The other large cities, such as Birmingham, Newcastle, Leeds or Liverpool each have their strengths: Birmingham has a resurgent arts scene, for example, while people travel for miles to sample Newcastle's nightlife. These days Manchester can match the capital for glamour in cafés and clubs, and also boasts the inimitable draw of the world's best-known football team.

England's ancient cathedral cities, such as Lincoln, York, Salisbury, Durham and Winchester , cannot be equalled for sheer physical beauty. Wherever you're based, you're never more than a few miles from a ruined castle, a majestic country house, a secluded chapel or a monastery. In the southwest there are remnants of a Celtic culture that was all but eradicated elsewhere by the Romans, and everywhere you can find traces of prehistoric settlers - most famously the megalithic circles of Stonehenge and Avebury .

Most beguiling of all are the long-established villages of England, hundreds of which amount to nothing more than a pub, a shop, a gaggle of cottages and a farmhouse offering bed and breakfast. Devon, Cornwall , the Cotswolds and the Yorkshire Dales harbour some especially picturesque specimens, but every county can boast a decent showing. Then, of course, there's the English countryside, an extraordinarily diverse terrain from which Constable, Turner, Wordsworth, Emily Brontë and a host of other writers and artists took inspiration. Exmoor, Dartmoor, Bodmin Moor , the North York Moors and the Lake District are the most dramatic and best known of the national parks, each offering an array of landscapes crisscrossed with walking routes.

Westonbirt Arboretum, Gloucestershire
Autumn is the best time to appreciate the majestic beauty of this amazing collection of trees and plants set in peaceful countryside.

Cowes Week, Isle of Wight
The spirited atmosphere and sense of occasion at this yachting jamboree every August draw thousands, infecting even the staunchest landlubbers.

York Minster
Britain's biggest Gothic church has a thousand-year history and treasures to match, including the world's largest medieval stained-glass window.

A pint down the pub
From trendy micro-breweries to ancient coaching inns, England's pubs are an essential part of any visit.

St Ives Tate, Cornwall
Southwest England's best arts collection occupies a superb site overlooking Porthmeor Beach, and has a wonderful rooftop café.

Oxford
The famous old university town boasts many beautiful buildings, including the imposing Italianate rotunda, Radcliffe Camera.

Surfing, Newquay
The beaches strung along the north coast of Devon and Cornwall offers some great breaks, and Newquay is still the top place to see and be seen.

Royal Crescent, Bath
After visiting the baths, head to England's most elegant Georgian terrace, perfectly sited for views across the town.

WOMAD
Celebrations of World Music, Arts and Dance are now held all over the world, but the first and best is staged at Reading's Rivermead Leisure Complex each July.

Punting on the Cam
The handsome university town of Cambridge is justifiably popular, and punting on the River Cam is de rigueur.

Travel To France

France is the most visited country in the world. It has everything that you could ever want to see on your holidays: a great city like Paris, good beaches, more monuments than any other country, lovely nature, incredible mountain scenery; need I go on? France is also a very pleasant place to stay. It has good food, great wines and people enjoy their lives. And the best thing is, maybe apart from Paris, living in France does not have to be expensive. The North of France consists of the flatlands around the town of Lille and the Channel. The area will remind visitors in many ways of Belgium and the Netherlands. The Grand' Place in Lille for example is a lot like that of Brussels.
France Travel Guide
Paris, the city of light and its surroundings are one of the most visited areas. Paris is without a doubt one of the most beautiful cities on the planet. West of France is turned towards the Atlantic Coast. In the north Normandy & Brittany have rolling hills, sandy beaches and quiet little harbour towns. Normandy & Brittany have a more rugged coast and many neolithic sites. It has quite a distinct atmosphere from the rest of the country; you can still sense the Celtic origin of the region and its inhabitants.

The eastern part of France consists of the Alsace, Lorraine, Franche Comté and Burgundy regions. The landscape has rolling hills and many beautiful cities, such as Metz, Strasbourg, Nancy and Dijon. This region produces many famous wines, including magnificent pinot noirs and chardonnays valued the world over, as well as the famous "Yellow wine" from the Jura mountain vineyard.

The Center of France is in many ways the most quiet part of France. But the great treasure of this region is the Loire valley , with many great castles and beautiful towns. Chartres with its famous cathedral and Tours rate among the most beautiful French cities.

The Alps are great for skiing in winter and hiking in summer. Albertville, Grenoble and Chamonix have all hosted the Olympic games. But the Alps also have nice towns to visit, such as Chambéry, Annecy or Grenoble .

The South with its lovely nature, good food, roman ruins and of course the Riviera draws a lot of visitors every year. Towns like Orange, and Arles but also big cities like Marseille and Toulon are must sees. The Provence is dotted with pleasant small villages. In the South west of France the Dordogne is one of the most quintessential French regions. The valley is so pretty, the towns are so cute and the food is so good, that it is hard to believe that the people who live here go somewhere else for their holidays. The Languedoc has its own language and culture. In the south of the Languedoc you find the Pyrenees, a great mountain range separating France from Spain, where you can hike and ski. The towns of Toulouse and Montpellier are nice and the medieval town of Carcassone is a top destination.

Best of France

La Rochelle

The city of La Rochelle was the first city in the world to provide free bikes - "city bikes", back in the 70's. Free to use for the day. La Rochelle also has beautiful beaches all around where you can enjoy and relax, La Rochelle is also famous for its towers some of them are: La Tour de la Lanterne, Tour Saint-Nicolas and la Tour de la Chaine.
he French Alps

If you like skying this is a good option, the French Alps are imponent and majestic, the perfect place to sky, the Mount Blanc is the highest mountain in Western Europe with an altitude of 4808 meters. There are also shop markets and valleys with trees and lakes, the landscape is simply fascinating.

The Eiffel Tower

This is probably the most known monument in France, but at the beginning it was a not very well accepted construction, french citizens did not like it and thought it was a waste of money. This iron tower was built on the Champ de Mars beside the River Seine in Paris, the tower replaced the Washington Monument and was called the Tower Eiffel in honor of its designer, engineer Gustave Eiffel.

Champagne

Champagne is a province located at the northeast of France, and is well known for its famous white wine. Champagne is mostly fermented in two sizes bottles, standard bottle (750 mL), and Magnum (1.5 L). In general, magnums are thought to be higher quality, as there is less oxygen in the bottle, and the volume to surface area favors the creation of appropriately-sized bubbles.

Chartres Cathedral

Chartres is truly one of the greatest of all French Gothic cathedrals. Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Chartres is located less than 100 km (about 50 miles) south of Paris and is considered to be one of the finest examples of the "high Gothic" style of architecture.
